Saunders Attends Regional Transit Authority's Legislative Luncheon

It was a pleasure to attend the Regional Transit Authority's Legislative Luncheon alongside several colleagues and to hear about the enhancements the RTA has achieved thanks to increased funding over the past two state budget cycles.

Specifically, I got the chance to meet with leaders from the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority and the Franklin Regional Transit Authority to discuss issues in my district specifically.

I am very grateful for the leadership of RTA and remain committed to advancing reliable, accessible, and equitable transit in Massachusetts.

Saunders Hosts Ludlow Boys and Girls Club at the State House

The MA Boys and Girls Club Alliance had their annual State House Advocacy Day, and I was happy to be joined by Senator Oliveira in hosting the Ludlow club in Boston. After a meeting discussing the club's priorities and goals, I was happy to take them on a tour of the State House.

I look forward to continuing to support and advocate for the incredible work the club does for our local youth. They truly are a pillar of the Ludlow community, and I am proud to support their mission and help ensure they can continue to make lasting differences in the generations to come.

Agriculture Day at the State House

Each year, the Massachusetts Legislative Caucus and the Joint Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries host "Ag Day," a celebration of the local farmers, fishers, traders, and commodity groups that make up the flourishing food system of our Commonwealth.

As Acting Chair of the Joint Committee of Agriculture and Fisheries, I had the privilege of addressing hundreds of local farmers and supporters of agriculture, including young people across the state involved in Future Farmers of America and 4H.

As I mentioned in my speech, supporting agriculture in Massachusetts means supporting strong local economies and resilient food systems. As I continue in my role as Acting Chair, I look forward to continuing the fight against food insecurity and strengthening the partnerships that sustain our communities.

Honoring Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month

April was Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. I was honored to join community members and leaders in recognizing this important cause at Belchertown's Flag Raising Ceremony. Thank you to District Attorney Sullivan, the Belchertown Police Department, and Children's Advocacy Center of Hampshire County for helping put the event together.

I am committed to building stronger, safer communities for every child, and I am grateful for our region's dedicated organizations, educators, and advocates who join me in this mission.

Saunders Makes Appearance on News Show "InFocus with Patrick Berry"

It was a pleasure to join Patrick Berry on his WWLP/22News show InFocus, a public affairs program dedicated to discussions regarding Western Massachusetts' public policy issues and current events.

I spoke about my ongoing efforts supporting Massachusetts farms and food insecurity, addressed rising energy costs, and discussed ways in which we can expand health care access fo
r Western MA residents.

Quabbin Fishermen's Association
Annual Awards Banquet

It was an honor to speak at the QFA Annual Awards Banquet and connect with local members and friends.

As an avid supporter of Quabbin recreation, I will continue to work to ensure fishermen have access to the Quabbin Reservoir. I am grateful to the QFA for their continued efforts in ensuring our community can continue to enjoy what the Quabbin has to offer.

Deepening Ties with the Agriculture Community

As the newly-appointed Acting Chair of the Joint Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries, I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the incredible individuals who sustain our food systems and agricultural infrastructure across the Commonwealth.

Recently, I had the opportunity to join the Massachusetts Association of Dairy Farmers for their Annual Meeting. Alongside with local dairy farmers, industry partners, and legislative colleagues, we gathered to discuss issues impacting the future of dairy farming in our state. The dairy industry stretches far and wide throughout the Commonwealth, and it is important for me to understand their needs and legislative priorities as I assume this new responsibility.

In addition, The Hampshire, Hampden, and Franklin County Farm Bureau recently hosted me at their annual Tri-County Farm Bureau Legislative Brunch, where I got the chance to connect with local farm industry leaders and legislative colleagues to discuss current issues in the agricultural community.

This was a fantastic opportunity to better understand both the gaps and successes faced by the industry. As a legislator covering all three of these counties, I look forward to working closely with the Bureau to address these needs in the long-term.

Saunders Joins Governor Healey for 413 Day

I was excited to join Governor Healey to celebrate 413 Day, an annual celebration that highlights the amazing culture, economy, and communities of Western Massachusetts. It was a chance to celebrate a number of investments in our region that will help support our growth.
Among the events on 413 Day was the 2026 Housing Choice Designations Announcement and Celebration. The Healey-Driscoll Administration has designated 29 new "Housing Choice Communities," recognizing cities and towns that are taking steps to support housing growth. Communities earn this designation by updating zoning or advanacing new housing projects, and in return gain priority access to state funding for infrastructure and planning.

Among the towns designated was our very own New Salem! The above photo highlights my colleagues and me celebrating the designation of small and rural towns across the Commonwealth, as this was a focus for the program this year. Our hope is that this will expand access to affordable homes and ensure that towns of all sizes can share the benefits of the Commonwealth' growth.

Saunders Speaks on MMA Panel

It was a pleasure to join the Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA) for their Rural & Western MA Conference. Senator Jo Comerford and I had the opportunity to be panelists during the Q&A portion of the event, answering several questions from community members and stakeholders.

Specifically, we discussed fiscal uncertainty surrounding the FY27 budget process, including the impact of the federal administration on Massachusetts' revenues and local aid. We also spoke about regionalization and shared services, collaborative municipal initiatives, and inequities in current education and municipal funding formulas.

I am very grateful for the important work the MMA is doing to advocate for our region, and I will continue to work to grant our communities the equity, support, and visibility they deserve.

Meetings with Community Advocates

A great pleasure of mine as a State Representative is having the opportunity to meet with local advocates who work tirelessly to improve our communities. Recently, I met with folks from the Franklin Regional Council of Governments (pictured left) to discuss local initiatives to improve health in the region. We discussed the Franklin-Hampshire Public Health Training Hub, as well as Valley Health Regional Collaborative.

These programs play an instrumental role in expanding access to care in our rural communities, and I will continue working to ensure they have the resources they need to succeed.

In addition, I met with local reporters and advocates from Free Press Action and the Media Power Collaborative (pictured right) to discuss growing challenges facing local news in Massachusetts. Local journalism is a pillar of our democracy, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to strengthen and preserve reporters' abilities to perform their essential work.

News from the State House

Saunders Supports $1.8B State Investments in Schools, Transit, and Local Farms

In a recent session, I was proud to join colleagues in the House of
Representatives to pass a $1.8 billion supplemental budget that invests in public education, transportation, and local agriculture, as well targeted funding for rural schools in my district.

I was able to secure earmark funding for local schools in my district, including $25,000 for Shutesbury Elementary School curriculum upgrades, $15,000 for Swift River School student technology devices, and $30,000 for Belchertown Public Schools facility and safety improvements.

As we continue pushing for broader increases in rural school funding, it is critical that we also address immediate needs that make a real difference for students and educators. I am proud to deliver this funding for our rural communities and to continue fighting for rural schools across Western Massachusetts.

Massachusetts Fiscal Year 2027 Budget

At the end of April, I joined my House colleagues in passing their Fiscal Year 2027 budget. Funded at $63.41 billion, the budget works to respond to federal cuts and prioritizes education, health care, housing, and workforce development.

I was proud to secure earmarks to address needs from the 7th Hampden District. Recipients include the Town of Petersham, the Lupa Zoo, Belchertown Animal Control, Ludlow Mills Industrial Complex, and Friends of Quabbin.

The budget is now headed to the Senate, where they will undergo the same reviewal process sometime in May. After they have produced their version, a Conference Committee will take a month or so to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate version. By mid-July, we should have a finalized budget for the Governor to sign. If you have any further questions about the state budget process, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Saunders Hosts Belchertown MLK Food Drive

Over MLK Day Weekend, I co-hosted the Belchertown Community Food Drive alongside Representative Mindy Domb and Senator Jake Oliveira. The donations were dropped off at the Amherst Survival Center, a local nonprofit serving residents from 13 towns in Western MA.

Food insecurity affects families in every corner of our region, including right here in Belchertown. This food drive is a straightforward way for neighbors to come together and support the Amherst Survival Center's critical work during the winter months.

I was happy to come together with community members to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy through collective service and care for neighbors in need. I am especially appreciative of the generosity of Window World of Western Massachusetts.

Saunders Celebrates Shutesbury Library Grand Opening

I was honored to attend the grand opening for the new Shutesbury Public Library and provide some remarks as part of the celebration.

This new building is an exciting addition to the Shutesbury community, providing enriching opportunities for folks from all walks of life. At 4,500 square-feet, this solar-powered building represents a solid investment in the town's future.

I look forward to hosting my monthly Shutesbury office hours at the new library (66 Leverett Street). Please note this change from the Shutesbury Town Hall location.

Western MA Economic Development Council Hosts Legislative Delegation

I was glad to join my Western MA colleagues at the Western MA Economic Development Council's Legislative Luncheon. The event was hosted by new EDC President and CEO Aaron Vega.

I look forward to continuing to work with the EDC, supporting their efforts to strengthen the regional economy.

Saunders Speaks at Human Service Forum Event

I was pleased to attend the Human Service Forum's Annual Legislative Reception. The organization serves as a convener of local nonprofit and public agencies, providing support and networks for these groups as they navigate the nonprofit space.

The event was an opportunity discuss current challenges and successes in the human service field. I joined with my colleagues to discuss legislative priorities and how they fit into the Forum's mission.

My remarks focused on the importance of connectivity among providers to ensure that folks are receiving wrap-around care. Further, I highlighted the importance of being creative as we navigate an unreliable federal partner and state revenues are struggling to grow with the rate at which costs increase.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western MA Legislative Breakfast

It was a pleasure to attend the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western MA Legislative Breakfast. I was proud to join my Western MA colleagues in supporting this amazing organization.

Big Brothers Big Sisters supports local youth by creating consistent, impactful mentorship relationships that help young people find a sense of belonging and a stronger sense of possibility.

It was an honor to recognize the people that help make these connections possible, and to get a better understanding of their legislative priorities. I look forward to continuing to support their amazing work.

ERC5 Legislative Breakfast

I was happy to have the opportunity to speak at and attend the ERC5 Legislative Breakfast. The ERC5 supports local small businesses and promotes economic growth.

It was a pleasure to connect with local students and answer their questions regarding the role of AI in education and connecting soon-to-be and recent graduates to jobs out of college.

Standing up for Fishing Access at Pottapaug and O'Laughlin Ponds

The Department of Conservation and Recreation recently held a public meeting to discuss the closure of Pottapaug and O'Laughlin Ponds to fishing. I have been actively working with anglers and the DCR to reopen these bodies of water.

At the meeting, I underscored the importance of public access, including fishing access, at the Quabbin. Along with my colleagues Senator Jake Oliveira and Representative Todd Smola, I urged the DCR to reopen the ponds for the start of the fishing season. I will continue to advocate for fishing access and monitor this situation as new developments unfold.

News from the State House

Advocating for Equitable Funding for Quabbin Watershed Communities

At the recent Joint Committee on Bonding, Capital Expenditures and State Assets hearing, the public testified about the Mass Ready Act. As a Committee member, I had the opportunity to discuss progress made to equitably fund Quabbin Watershed towns.

The bill sets out an enhanced PILOT payment of $50,000 over the course of two years for Quabbin watershed communities. While this is a terrific start, this additional funding is woefully inadequate to meet the responsibility that MWRA ratepayers have to the towns stewarding the Quabbin watershed.

I will continue advocating for Watershed communities to have equitable access to that water and appropriate support for their stewardship.

Saunders Votes in Favor of Apprenticeship Bill

I was happy to join my House colleagues in voting for legislation that expands apprenticeships on large public construction projects.

The bill requires that public projects over $10 million have apprenticeship opportunities. Starting one year after enactment, projects would have to employ apprentices for 5% of total work hours, increasing to 10% in after three years and 15% after four years.

This bill will strengthen our skilled trades workforce, increase paid career pathways, and help ensure that MA has the workers needed to meet future infrastructure demands.

The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.

Saunders Co-Sponsors the PROTECT Act

I am proud to sign on a as a co-sponsor of HD.5608, An Act promoting rule of law, oversight, trust, and equal constitutional treatment (PROTECT Act).

Filed by the MA Black and Latino Caucus, this bill protects due-process and constitutional rights in the face of federal overreach. Specifically, it protects access to MA courts, provides greater oversight to law enforcement collaboration, and streamlines the certification process for individuals seeking immigration relief.

This bill is another step towards our efforts to ensure the rights of all Massachusetts residents are protected.

House Passes Defibrillator Requirement

In a recent session, the House of Representatives passed H.4993, An Act Requiring Automated External Defibrillators at Sporting Events. This bill requires at least one AED to be available at any public stadium or hosting facility, as well as at least one trained employee or volunteer capable of operating the device.

I was happy to join my House colleagues in passing this measure, which now stands before the Senate for consideration.

Saunders Celebrates Veteran's Day 2025

Saunders at Veterans' Day Ceremonies
On Veteran's Day, Representative Saunders joined Senator Jacob Oliveira and local officials in honoring local heroes from Belchertown and Ludlow. He was proud to present several citations, including Belchertown Hometown Hero Lew Lorraine and Ludlow Veteran of the Year Daniel Valadas.

He was happy to honor their immense service, selflessness, and sacrifice to their country. His gratitude extends to all who have served, and he remains deeply thankful for their lasting contributions to our communities and our nation.
On November 19th, Representative Saunders joined his House colleagues in passing comprehensive legislation aimed at improving safety for health care workers across the Commonwealth.

“Health care workers keep our communities healthy, often under tremendous pressure,” Saunders said. “Too many have faced threats or violence while simply doing their jobs. This bill takes meaningful steps to protect those who care for us, while ensuring facilities have the tools, standards, and accountability needed to keep workers safe."

The bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration.

End-of-Year Budget Adds Support for Healthcare and Education Funding

On November 25th, Governor Healey signed an end-of-year budget that invests $2.31 billion into a number of priorities, including healthcare, universal meals for students, student financial aid, housing resources, life-sciences, and vaccine research.

The end-of-year budget is another part of the Legislature's efforts to combat federal funding cuts and maintain Massachusetts' values.

Representative Saunders was happy to join his colleagues in working to pass this important piece of legislation to the Governor's desk. You can read more about the bill
here.
Representative Saunders was featured as the guest speaker for the annual Franklin County Non-Profit Summit. He held a Q&A, answering questions about effective communication with legislative partners, anticipated political and funding challenges facing social service organizations, strategies for engaging in solution development to sustain services, and upcoming housing initiatives for Franklin County.

Saunders facilitated a discussion on how nonprofit leaders are preparing for impacts from federal budget cuts and mentioned ways in which the Commonwealth is working to ease this burden.
Rep. Saunders made his monthly appearance on Talk the Talk, a local news and public affairs radio show on WHMP.

Saunders discussed that without federal health insurance subsidies, millions across the Commonwealth are at risk of increased premiums beyond what is affordable to many working families.

He also highlighted the importance of the $2.9 billion environmental bond bill (S.2542) that is aimed at funding climate resilience, clean water, and conservation projects across the state. The bill, known as The Mass Ready Act, would position Massachusetts for long-term climate resilience and fiscal responsibility.

On Wednesday, November 20th, Governor Maura Healey signed into law the Mass Leads Act, an economic development bill that will make Massachusetts a global leader in emerging industries like climate-tech and applied artificial intelligence (AI), while building on the success of the state's life sciences sector.

The bold investments in the Mass Leads Act, also known as H.5100, An Act relative to strengthening Massachusetts' economic leadership, will stimulate new and proven industries, support workforce development and talent retention, and modernize economic growth strategies. Saunders Supports 2025 State Budget Package, Secures Local Funding
Representative Saunders joined colleagues to deliver the legislature's final version of the state's 2025 budget to Governor Healey's desk on Friday, July 19th.

Total funding for the state budget comes to $58 billion and establishes historic levels of investment at all levels of education, transportation, workforce development, health care, and rural equity, reflecting the legislature's ongoing commitment to delivering on affordability for residents and economic competitiveness for the Commonwealth.

Included in the 2025 state budget are hundreds of thousands of dollars for items throughout the 7th Hampden district. This includes a $1.5 million increase in Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) for towns that steward state-owned land.

The state's commitment to affordable and accessible health care includes $20.36 billion for the operation of MassHealth, $622.4 million for the Department of Mental Health's adult support services, $390 million in Chapter 257 funding to support pay rates for direct care providers, and $15 million for the Healthy Incentives Program.

Legislature Passes Bill Targeting Revenge Porn, Enhances Protections for Survivors
